December 2000
Our farm just went through a few
nights of hard freeze right before Christmas, click on the thumbnails below
for larger pictures of the aftermath. We use a system of mist sprayers which
we leave on during the whole period of freeze, the ice sheet that forms on
the plants protects them from the hard freeze.
Update: Since those
early Winter hard freeze nights (in the low 20s), we've had quite a few more
of them, for a total of about 15 throughout this winter (Yes! even here in
Florida). This has been an excellent trail for our Anti-freeze system. Since
the cold period in now over, our crops have recovered and the losses were minimal.
Our U-Pick Strawberry operation has resumed and is back to normal, with a healthy
fruit production. The same is true with our Lettuce and other such production,
our insulated pots are an excellent protection against freezing for the roots,
and coupled with a functional Mysting System (Anti-Freeze) to protect the rest
of the plants, the losses should remain very low.
